Product Designer · London

Jake Cox

I'm a London-based product designer with 13 years making complex software simple to use, across 0-to-1 startups and global media brands. I use AI as a core part of my process, applying the same detail, care and attention when prototyping in code to ship quality faster.

Environmental data platform

BX

Making dense climate data feel simple for non-technical farmers.

A climate-tech startup helping farmers measure and act on their environmental data. The challenge was making genuine complexity feel simple to use.

As design lead and interim PM, I built the design and product function owning strategy and delivery. We established a design system and defined internal product processes from the ground up, allowing us to ideate and prototype quickly, to ship and learn from POC features with real users. I also supported the company's expansion to the US, and led an agency rebrand to sharpen the value proposition.

Multi-platform design system

NewsKit

A shared system behind The Sun, talkSPORT, Dow Jones and The Times.

When I joined the team, News UK was building the same features in silo across every title, with little or no shareability. We worked to bring the titles' output together under a common foundation to promote re-use and increase capacity for innovation. I worked on the system's functionality, brand identity and internal adoption of a themeable white label design system.

0-to-1 audio product and brand

Times Radio

Extending a 250-year print brand into audio, without losing its base.

I was design lead on a newly formed team, taking the brand and product from concept to launch on web, iOS and Android in four months. I built a multi-title component system, later rolled out to TalkSport and Virgin Radio, reducing development time and consolidating how media products were delivered across News UK's titles.

Heritage brand and design system

Times Literary Supplement

Bringing a 117-year title to a modern, engaged digital readership.

Before touching the design, I helped redefine what the TLS stood for: stimulating but inclusive, heritage-led but not bound by it. Stakeholder workshops and a reader panel shaped the direction, and usability testing validated it, with every key metric improving from pre to post test. A tiered system of elements, modules and templates then let an offshore team ship it consistently across the site.

Interactive · built with AI

Breakbeat Sequencer

A synthesised 909 drum machine and a break chopper, playing together in time — slice a break and re-sequence it alongside live drums, in the browser.

Building this with AI allowed more focus on the experience, with quick iteration and faster ideation than a more manual workflow. The work moved from writing every line to steering the build and judging what felt right.

About me

I've spent the majority of my career living and working in London, across a host of different business and problem sizes.

I feel most excited working in ambiguity, defining the problem space and uncovering areas that provide real value to users once they're given the right attention. This often means using AI to rapidly ideate and test solutions until a simple and intuitive option develops.

Outside work I produce and DJ, with a ten-year London residency. Music is where the systems thinking started: patterns, structure, and knowing when to break them.
